The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) is beginning construction on the Red Line’s East 79th Street Station to make the station compliant with the American’s With Disabilities Act (ADA) and to meet the SITES Sustainability Program.
The $10 million project was designed by RTA engineers, and Panzica Construction is the lead contractor. The station will be closed until work is completed, which is expected by August 2021.
The new station will have access ramps and stair structures down the existing hillside, a new pedestrian track crossing with railroad gate, flashing lights and audible bells, and a new entry plaza.
Other features of the new station include:
- New platforms long enough to accommodate 3-car Red Line trains;
- Upgraded lighting;
- Cameras and emergency call boxes;
- Replacement of existing track through the station; and
- Amenities such as bike racks and upgraded station signage and wayfinding.
